What is Reiki?
Reiki is derived from Japanese words 'rei' and 'ki', which stand for 'the universe' and 'life energy'. The practice of Reiki first originated in Japan in the early twentieth century. It was developed by a Buddhist by the name of Mikao Usui in 1922. Soon after, it quickly spread to other parts of the world and reached the United States in the 1940s through Hawaii. The main idea behind Reiki is that all humans have a 'life force energy' flowing through their bodies that cannot be seen. Reiki has been known to help many people with pain management, relaxation, anxiety and also depression.
Reiki involves healing the energy of individuals, in which practitioners gently move their hands above or on the client's clothed body. It has been found that the parts of the body which may have gone under physical or emotional pain often have energy blocks, which can lead to various illnesses. This energy that has stagnated can be removed by Reiki in a way that is similar to acupuncture. For this type of healing, the energy fields around the body are targeted, which ultimately helps in reducing stress, illnesses and pain.
What does a Reiki session involve?
A Reiki session is usually carried out in a peaceful setting, where the person is made to lie on a table or sit in a comfortable chair. The session could involve some music in the background, which is dependent on the preference of th
e individual. Thereafter, the Reiki specialist places hands on different parts of the body, including the head, torso, and limbs, for around 2 to 5 minutes. In case of an injury or a wound, the hands are not placed on the area but gently hovered above it. It is believed that as the hands move throughout the areas, a transfer of energy takes place. This process is repeated for different body parts until the practitioner feels that the energy has stopped flowing. Some of the techniques involved in the process are:
Harmful energy extraction
Raking and smoothing of the aura
Many Reiki practitioners also use chakra healing wands and crystals to enable healing.
Benefits of Reiki
According to the Reiki experts, the universal energy, which is known as 'chi' is channeled to mediate the healing effects. This unseen life force permeates the body in a Reiki session to promote relaxation, develop mental, emotional and spiritual well-being, and also aid the natural healing process of the body. It can help people dealing with significant emotional stress. Some of the other issues, the symptoms of which can be greatly eased with Reiki are:
