Reiki: What is it and are there benefits?

Reiki is a type of alternative therapy that involves the ritualized medical practice of "laying hands." Albeit a lot more low-key than the stereotypical evangelical practice of laying hands, Reiki nevertheless involves the supposed transfer of energy with the practitioner as a conduit. This form of energy healing is intended to be used as a complementary and alternative therapy to help alleviate symptoms of illness and to improve general well-being.

The word "Reiki" is derived from the Japanese words "rei" (universal) and "ki" (life energy). Purportedly, this universal energy or ki has healing effects.

During a Reiki session, a holistic healer will focus on unrestricted breathing and apply hand movements to your fully clothed body in a relaxed environment. Reiki has a strong following among many people who practice integrative medicine, and it is often used to treat stress.

What are the benefits of receiving Reiki?

According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, people use Reiki for relaxation, stress reduction and symptom relief, in efforts to improve overall health and well-being.

A Reiki treatment may do the following:

  • Relieves pain, anxiety, and fatigue

  • Treats depression

  • Bring about a peaceful, deep state of relaxation

  • Dissolve energy blockages and tension

  • Detoxify the body

  • Boosts mood

  • Support the well-being of a person receiving traditional medical treatments that are debilitating (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, kidney dialysis)

  • Supply universal life force energy to the body

  • Stimulate the body’s immune system

  • Help to relieve pain

  • Stimulate tissue and bone healing after injury or surgery

  • Increase the vibrational frequency on physical, mental,

  • Emotional and spiritual levels

  • Enhances quality of life

What to Expect During a Reiki Session?

During a Reiki session—which can last anywhere from half an hour to nearly two hours, depending on where you go—you sit on a massage table, fully clothed and covered with a sheet and/or blankets, and a practitioner lightly rests his or her hands on (or hovers them over) various parts of your body where energy is said to flow the most.
